Beads of sweat pooled at Emmett’s brow as his machete hacked through the dense undergrowth. Once he’d run out of rough-cut road, Emmett had no choice but to ditch the Land Rover and continue by foot. He gritted his teeth; the fortune that awaited him was worth every effort. Stories of a bejewelled idol lying deep in the untamed Amazon were thought to be mere legends. But Emmett trusted his sources - after all, they came with a 4.2 star TripAdvisor rating.
How the FlightHut travel agent got her hands on the map, Emmett would never know. But surely her vivid descriptions of the beasts and bandits that guarded the lost temple couldn’t be faked? After a life in the confines of small town Delaware, this was Emmett’s one opportunity to replicate the Indiana Jones heroics that plastered his childhood bedroom.
Daylight broke through the jungle canopy as Emmett stumbled into the temple clearing.
He recoiled instinctively, expecting thrusting spears and shouting voices.
Instead, he opened his eyes to a smiling woman in a FlightHut hat, “Bienvenidos Señor, your tour will start momentarily.” She pointed to a group of similarly confused sweaty older gentlemen, also clad in cowboy hats and whips.
“Señor!” waved a cheery teenager from a nearby stall, looking up from the phone charging at the outlet next to him. He gestured to the rows of identical golden idols in front of him: “For you, only $20!”
Emmett sighed as he sheathed his machete: “I’ll take one, thanks.”
